How Do I Configure Password Settings?

The General Settings -> Passwords tab is where you can set the password  requirements for users in the LMS.

What Does Each Setting Do?

  • Minimum password length - Minimum required character length a user's password needs to be.
  • Uppercase -
    • Allowed - This will allow users to include uppercase letters in their passwords.
    • Not Allowed - This will prevent users from including uppercase letters in their passwords.
    • Required - This will require users to include an uppercase letter(s) in their passwords. If this is selected, set the minimum requirement in the next field.
  • Minimum number of uppercase - Set the minimum number of uppercase letters needed for a user's password.

    • Allowed - This will allow users to include lowercase letters in their passwords.

    • Required - This will require users to include a symbol(s) in their passwords. If this is selected, set the minimum requirement in the next field.
  • Minimum number of symbols - Minimum number of symbols needed for a user's password.
  • Minimum number of character groups - Minimum number of either uppercase, lowercase, numbers, or symbols needed for a user's password. This should not be set to more than 4, as there are only 4-character groups in total. This is redundant to the individual minimums and should only be used if you are not requiring individual minimums.
  • Days for a password to expire - The number of days until a user's password will need to be reset.
  • Enforce password expiration for main admins - Enforces for Main Admins the password expiration period set in the Days for a password to expire
  • Enforce password expiration for sub admins - Enforces for Sub Admins the password expiration period set in the Days for a password to expire
  • Enforce password expiration for user group admins - Enforces for User Group Admins the password expiration period set in the Days for a password to expire
  • Enforce password expiration for students - Enforces for Students the password expiration period set in the Days for a password to expire Note that this also applies to Instructors.
  • Lock Passwords for Students (no editing/reset allowed). This will ignore the Enforce Password Expiration Option - This locks the passwords for students, not allowing them to change their passwords themselves.
  • Lock Passwords for Admins (no editing/reset allowed). This will ignore the Enforce Password Expiration Option - This locks the passwords for admins, not allowing them to change their passwords themselves.
  • Sync passwords between an Admin and their linked student account - With this checked, the password of an admin with a linked student or instructor user account will sync with the student or instructor account, allowing them to log in with the same password for both accounts.
  • Enforce user to reset password upon next login after administrator reset - This will force the user to reset their password to something different than what the administrator just set the user's password to. Note: this setting is not retroactive; it is only enforced for passwords set after the setting is enabled.
  • Enforce user to reset password after reactivation - This will send the users an email upon re-activation with a link to reset their password and sign-in. The link is only valid for 24 hours; after that they will need to contact an admin to reset their password to be able to access the system.

Once all settings have been selected, click Save Settings at the bottom of the page.

A password reset placeholder can be included in emails by using the placeholder [password_reset_link].
