General Settings — Login Tab Quick Reference Guide

Audience: Main Admin

Overview

On the Login tab, Main Admins configure the User experience and requirements for the log in process. The settings chosen for self-registration, welcome text, lockout and so forth are the default for the LMS. The required LMS fields are populated with default values.

Enabled Permissions Required to Complete the Following Steps

  • General Settings: Log In

Note: User Group Admins do not have permission to access General Settings.

Steps to Update the Login Tab

  1. From Admin Navigation, click General Settings.
  2. Click the Login tab.
  3. Enter the Number of login attempts before lockout1 to define the number of failed attempts a User can have before their account is locked out. The default is 10 attempts.
  4. Enter the Lockout period in minutes1   to define the number of minutes a User is locked out before they can try logging in again. The default is 1 minute.
  5. Click the Allow users to register themselves2 check box to allow Users to self-register. If checked, the LMS provides a Create Account button on the Log In screen for Users to create their own accounts.
  6. Click the Force required user fields. If a user logs in without a value in a required field, force them to fill it in upon login check box to require a User to complete required Registration Fields on the profile page if they are not completed.
  7. Click the Track user logins (for reports) check box to track User login information for reporting purposes.
  8. Enter text in the Text for Log In Screen for the Welcome Text to display at the bottom of the Log In window.
  9. Enter text in the Help Text for Log In screen (Novus III only)3 field for the Help Text to display when the Help button is clicked on the Log In screen.
  10. Enter Login box width (pixels) to define the number of pixels to set a custom login box width.
  11. Enter Login box height (pixels) to define the number of pixels to set a custom login box height.
  12. Enter the URL in Custom login URL (for single sign-on) to identify a Single Sign-On (SSO) URL if using this feature. Important: A project with TraCorp must be opened to integrate an SSO with the LMS.
  13. Enter the URL in On Log-Out re-direct users to this URL to identify a URL if you want Users to be redirected to the URL when they log out. If the field is blank, the User is directed to the normal Log In page.
  14. Click Save Settings.

Best Practices

1 Consider how login attempts and a lockout period are set for other systems in the organization.

2 If you allow Users to self-register, it is highly recommended to utilize Registration Fields with auto-assignment rules or Access Codes.

3 In the Help text, direct Users to internal resources for technical issues and for questions about use of and content in the LMS.
